The sparkle of Archilume at the heart of the Watt Plaza lobby renovation
Wednesday, December 8, 2021 – Even beyond the doors, the soft glow of the Watt Plaza Lobby’s lighting function simply cannot be missed. STUDIOS Architecture’s new lobby design required a massive decorative light display and Canadian lighting studio, Archilume, got the call. The result is a striking constellation of 350 (yes, 350!) Individually mounted P1M LED luminaires.
The P1M is Archilume’s marquee pendant. This paved the way for what is now the brand’s design ethic, blending science and beauty. Since its inception in 2013, Archilume has been producing anti-glare decorative luminaires that revolutionize the use of innovative lighting technologies – one of the first to use energy-efficient chip-on-board LED technology in a luminaire – and , with the P1M, helped lead the way with the application of total internal reflection optics in decorative LED lighting. Technological advances in lighting aside, the brilliance of the P1M lies in its ability to be suspended solitary or grouped together to form a chandelier. But it wasn’t until the Watt Plaza lobby and STUDIOS Architecture’s need for a focal lighting feature that the P1M could truly shine.
Lighting design specialists Banks Landl Lighting Design (formerly Hiram Banks Lighting Design) were involved in the project. BLLD designed a jig system for the overall 15ft x 19ft lighting cornice area in the ceiling with which the contractor could simply lay out the individual mounting points and required wiring. BLLD’s lighting design pattern was projected from the ground, using a laser to mark each of the installation positions. Each luminaire was then mounted to a different cable length. This was critical to the overall success of the installation design, as the model had to be precise and simple enough for the installation to be effective, but random enough that the overall mass seemed unified.
âSince this component is the focal point of the lobby project, the element needed to maintain a certain specific mass so that it has the stature it needs to make an impact. The density and scale of the installation make this lighting device a success. – Matthew Landl, lighting design by Banks Landl.
The P1M is designed to evoke a burning candle, poetically inverted, creating a feeling of childish wonder at the provenance of the light. Combining minimalism and contemporary style, its simple shape hides the light source emitting a pleasant, warm and elegant light that instantly enhances the space. Its use of design is limitless, as shown in the Watt Plaza Lobby project. Designers can create any number of glare-free light compositions with its 1.5 “diameter micro canopy, making it ideal for large scale chandelier formations.
âWe are delighted to have worked with BLLD and STUDIOS Architecture. Not only did this design project really tap into our core design philosophy, the Watt Plaza lobby lighting installation also showcases the breadth of our product capabilities. We expect designers to explore and create unlimited site specific lighting installations for their projects. It’s like LEGO for the light! – Saleem Khattak, Archilume
First designed in the 1980s by architect Gin Wong, the lobby of the Watt Building is located between two 23-story towers. Renovated over 17,000 square feet, STUDIOS Architecture revealed a beautiful, flexible and bright space, nearly six times the original size. a collaborative environment for Watt Plaza tenants and their guests. Since Watt Plaza was the first LEED Platinum Certified office building in Century City, California, it was an integral part of the project to incorporate built-in functionality to maintain this status. The use of Archilume’s low wattage, low efficiency P1M fixtures in a large focused quantity, allowed the surrounding connection spaces to have reduced power consumption, thus allowing the design to be code compliant. strict CA Title 24 and contribute to the overall LEED goal.
To date, the Watt Plaza Lobby has received the IIDA SC Caliber award, best public and community space (2021), and the ENR California award, best regional project, renovation / restoration (2021).
Designed and manufactured in Vancouver, Canada, Archilume’s manufacturing ethic stems from a principle of maximizing the use of smaller local production facilities to create an inherently energy efficient product with a reduced carbon footprint. This business practice contributes to a healthy local economy with high standards of production quality.
Archilume prides itself on being more than a lighting design studio. With industrial designer Saleem Khattak at the helm, the studio is focused on evolutionary design, a creative process focused on designing future possibilities while keeping roots firmly rooted to ensure form meets function. Archilume’s anti-glare decorative luminaires are a revolution in the use of innovative lighting technologies and the application of the principle of total internal reflection optics in decorative LED lighting. The Archilume line of lighting is intended for lighting counters and bars, or in grouped formations like chandeliers in hotel lobbies, entrances, living rooms and dining rooms. The range is versatile and offers the possibility of ordering custom configurations.
