Matthew McConaughey’s “Hundred Years War” for Austin FC is well underway
But McConaughey has a growing advantage. Austin quickly grew from a college town to a city with one of the fastest growing populations in the country. So, for people who love UT and football, people who don’t know much about UT and love football, and people who don’t know how much they love football and just need some help. ‘a professional sports team nearby, there is Austin FC. Which, of course, means there’s McConaughey.
When McConaughey became part-owner of the club in August 2019, he was already the Culture Minister for UT Athletics since January of this year. It seemed natural that he would also reprise the same role for Austin FC.
It raised a few eyebrows for fans at the new club and around the league. People had questions: How much could a star the size of a true Oscar winner be personally invested in, but also what does a Minister of Culture actually do?
Both questions were answered categorically by the man himself.
“For a team that is going to represent the city of Austin, I have to be there as someone who knows Austin very well, that the two are mirror images of each other,” McConaughey said during MLS is Back Media Week. “The team, the product that we put on the pitch and the experience of the fans in this stadium. My goal, as Minister of Culture, is trying to align [the two]. When you take a snapshot above Q2 Stadium every night we play, you should be able to see the diversity, creative colors and vibrancy of Austin, Texas in the crowd. “
