Lego’s new Starry Night set lets you build Van Gogh’s iconic painting in 3D
Vincent van Gogh’s magnificent depiction of a shimmering night sky could soon be yours – in plastic brick form. Lego will release the 2,316-piece The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh set on June 1.
Lego’s latest masterpiece reinterprets van Gogh’s unique oil on canvas from 1889 in bricks that bring swirling clouds and rolling hills to life in three dimensions.
The finished product measures 12 inches high, 15 inches wide, and five inches deep. Not only does the set produce a framed Lego version of the famous painting, but it also includes a Van Gogh minifigure, brush, palette and easel.
Truman Cheng, a 25-year-old Hong Kong-based Lego fan, submitted the design through the Lego Ideas platform. It was created in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), where the original painting is on display.
As with most Lego model sets, The Starry Night (#21333) is extremely detailed. The 3D set showcases the artist’s brushstrokes and colors. Village Under Twinkling Stars was inspired by the view from van Gogh’s window at the asylum of the monastery of Saint-Paul de Mausole in Saint-Rémy, France, where he spent twelve months.
“It was a good puzzle to find tricks and techniques to capture the look of the original paint,” Cheng said of his design in a statement. “The brushstroke goes in many directions in the moon and swirling cloud, so there was creative use of the support and clip elements involved.”
Lego has also launched a contest online and in stores in select countries (excluding the United States) asking fans to submit their own night sky-inspired mini builds. The winning drawings will be exhibited at MoMA this summer as part of an installation in the lobby. Registrations will be accepted until June 30.
“At MoMA, we celebrate the opportunity to connect art and the public, and we are thrilled to be part of a new way to experience van Gogh’s work and inspire the creative impulse in people of all ages,” Sarah Suzuki, associate director of MoMA, said in a press release.
The set will be available for Lego VIP members (free registration) and MoMA members on May 25, 2022. After that, it will be on sale everywhere else on Lego.com, Lego stores, MoMA Design Store in New York . City and online at store.moma.org for $169.99.
