Lego Vidiyo looks like a TikTok-style musical video playground for kids
There was a lot of experimentation, and even . The latest Lego project? An AR compatible music video social app for grade school kids.
Vidiyo is a music video maker app and brick kit for ages 7-10 who can digitize tiles coded with special effects and create social music clips. There is an app where kids can create their own mixes and download them, using Lego pieces that can be scanned to unlock effects and augmented reality in videos.
Lego Vidiyo is a collaboration with Universal Music Group, which provides licensed music that can be mixed into videos. The sets appear to have minifigures as well as scannable special effects trigger tiles called BeatBits that can be used to create videos. The AR animation can be posed in the real world in a one-minute performance, which can be cut into downloadable 5-20 second clips that can be inserted into a social app created by Lego.
It’s a really weird idea, landing somewhere between Lego, TikTok, and musical games like Harmonix’s Hasbro collaboration,. It also almost looks like a Lego toy version of . Use of the Lego app will require parental consent, similar in a sense to how Lego’s first crack in a social app, Lego Life, operated in early 2017.
We don’t know much more about how Lego Vidiyo works or how much the sets cost. But Lego already has improved augmented reality sets, which work by being scanned with an AR-enabled phone or tablet. We haven’t tried Vidiyo yet, but we’ll be doing it soon … we’ll make more sense then.
