FDA calls for discontinuation of ivermectin
The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued an urgent advisory against taking a medicine intended for horses to treat or prevent COVID-19.
Ivermectin is used to deworm horses, but it has gained popularity in the United States and many believe it will fight COVID.
A controversial study has been published in Australia showing that ivermectin killed COVID within 48 hours. However, the test was not done on humans. It was carried out only in the laboratory. Similar studies from other countries have also been called into question.
The FDA has warned that the drug can cause serious side effects, including neurological problems and liver failure.
Medicines for animals are often very concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which can weigh much more than us, a ton or more. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans. Additionally, the FDA reviews drugs not only for the safety and efficacy of the active ingredients, but also for the inactive ingredients. Many inactive ingredients present in animal products are not evaluated for use in humans. Or they are included in much larger amounts than those used in humans. In some cases, we don’t know how these inactive ingredients will affect the way Ivermectin is absorbed in the human body. – FDA Opinion on Ivermectin
The use of ivermectin was recently the subject of a hearing in New Jersey.
Attorney John Coyle told New Jersey 101.5 morning host Bill Spadea earlier this month that he represented a woman infected with COVID and hospitalized at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.
According to Coyle, his client’s condition was serious and his attending physician prescribed ivermectin, but the hospital refused to administer the drug. While Coyle was in court for a judge to order the treatment, he says the woman died.
Ivermectin has not been approved by the FDA to treat COVID. The agency says it is not an antiviral drug.
It has been approved for use in humans to control parasites or to treat head lice and certain skin conditions.
