Disney and Bandai unveil the official Tamagotchi R2-D2
R2-D2 is perhaps one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars franchise, with nearly countless toys and merchandise including two different versions of lego. To that list is added a recently announced Tamagotchi toy by Disney and Bandai, where you can take care of your own digital pocket version of the astromech droid.
The new Tamagotchi arrives in the traditional egg-shaped design while sporting the iconic design cues of R2-D2 shown in two color options for its body: white and translucent blue. The latter is of course more consistent with the actual color scheme of the droid. The toy also comes with a pixelated monochrome 24×30 LCD display, with three physical buttons located underneath.
While the overall gameplay of the R2-D2 Tamagotchi remains unchanged from that of Bandai plus recent versions, the device comes with exclusive Star Wars themed activities to train and keep the beloved Star Wars droid entertained. According to the sci-fi franchise’s official website, you’ll be able to train R2 in 19 different skills and play nine different games with it, including a firefighting mini-game and even a holochess (aka Dejarik).
Since R2 is practically a droid, you’re probably wondering if there are any eating or hygiene related activities that need to be done. The answer to this question is ‘yes’, and you will also be happy (?) To know that it leaves you with no … trash to clean up. So instead of feeding it, you need to charge its gaming battery and keep it clean when it’s too dirty. A very smart workaround out there, Disney and Bandai.
The new Tamagotchi R2-D2 will release in the US on November 11, 2021, and pre-order through Amazon is expected to open on August 3 at 12 p.m. EST. Disney and Bandai have yet to reveal its price and it is not known if the toy will see an international release in the near future.
